Technology Decomposition and Technology Recombination in Industrial Catch-up for Large Emerging Economies: Evidence from Chinese Manufacturing Industries

چکیده

ABSTRACT The influence of technological learning on industry-level catch-up has long drawn substantial attention in the research field. However, underlying mechanisms and unique context large emerging economies are much less explored. To explain processes latecomers that face technology gap strive to build differentiated competitive advantage, this study builds absorptive capacity perspective deconstructs into two mechanisms: decomposition recombination. former entails decomposing advanced technologies pieces, parts, or modules, while latter process capturing market opportunities through recombining knowledge from diverse sources commercial products localized innovations adaptations. Then, we propose a ‘ladder-like’ (i.e., ladder ladder) investigate how jointly affect industrial performance China. Using seven-year panel data Chinese manufacturing industries, results indicate only recombination significantly positive relationship with performance. In addition, strengthens impact catch-up, weakens catch-up.

R&D, Technology Transfer and Productivity Growth: Evidence from Chinese Manufacturing Industries

Based on an industry-level data set for Chinese largeand medium-size manufacturing enterprises over the period of 1996–2006, the paper investigates the impacts of three technology acquisition channels, i.e. in-house R&D, foreign technology transfer and domestic technology transfer, on the productivity growth by using both the output elasticity and the rate of return methods. We find that in-hou...

Regional Industrial Growth Evidence from Chinese Industries

This paper examines several theories of regional industrial development in the case of China. It studies regional factors representing three broadly defined sources of regional growth: dynamic externalities arising from knowledge spillovers, natural advantage and local market conditions, and foreign trade and direct investment. Using provincial-level data on two-digit Chinese Industrial Classif...

R&D offshoring and technology learning in emerging economies: Firm-level evidence from the ICT industry

This paper studies the impact of the R&D offshoring of multinational enterprises on the firms in host emerging economies. We develop a two-stage non-cooperative game to analyze the strategic interaction between multinational and host country enterprises engaged in R&D investment. An empirical analysis of 12,309 manufacturing firms in the ICT industry in China shows that R&D offshoring has a pos...

The Effect of Technology Spillover from FDI: An Empirical analysis of Chinese Manufacturing Industries

This paper examines the effects of technology spillover from FDI based on panel data analysis of Chinese large-scale domestic manufacturing industries. We use the panel data of 27 Chinese manufacturing industries from 2001 to 2007. We estimate technology spillover effects by two steps. First, we estimate the total factor productivity of domestic firms’ and foreign firms’ by Cobb-Douglas Product...
